Spearmint tea for PCOS: does it actually work?
Mar 19, 2025If you do a quick Google search, you’ll find many natural remedies claiming to manage PCOS symptoms, but it can be hard to tell what is evidence-based or not. One popular remedy for managing PCOS symptoms is spearmint tea. But does spearmint tea really work for PCOS? Let’s explore the research to see if this herbal tea lives up to the hype.
What does spearmint tea do for PCOS?
Spearmint tea has gained attention for its potential to lower androgens, the male-patterned hormones that are often elevated in women with PCOS, such as testosterone and DHEA. These high androgen levels contribute to symptoms like excess hair growth in unwanted places (hirsutism), acne, irregular periods and hair loss.
A study by AkdoÄźan et al. (2007) found that women with hirsutism, including those with PCOS, who drank spearmint tea twice daily for five days had significantly lower free testosterone levels, suggesting spearmint tea may help with androgen-related symptoms like excess body and facial hair growth, head hair loss and acne. They also found that luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels increased, which are often reduced in PCOS.
Another study by Grant (2009) looked at 42 women with PCOS who drank spearmint tea twice a day for 30 days. The results? A significant drop in both free and total testosterone levels, and women reported that their hirsutism improved. While hair growth didn’t significantly change during the short study, the reduction in testosterone levels suggests that spearmint tea could be helpful for managing PCOS symptoms long-term.
How much spearmint tea should you drink?
Both studies used two cups of spearmint tea per day. So, if you’re trying spearmint tea for PCOS, aim for two cups daily for at least a month to potentially see improvements in androgen levels and related symptoms.
Ways to drink spearmint tea
You can enjoy spearmint tea hot or cold—it’s up to you! Most studies used hot tea, but there’s no evidence that drinking it cold reduces its benefits.
-
Hot tea: Steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried spearmint leaves or one spearmint tea bag in boiling water for 5-10 minutes.
-
Cold tea: Brew the tea hot, refrigerate, and enjoy over ice.
-
Add to smoothies.
-
Make into icy poles.
Are there any side effects of spearmint?
Spearmint is generally safe for most people when consumed in moderate amounts (1-2 cups per day). However, drinking large amounts of spearmint tea overtime can reduce androgen levels beyond normal levels. Some people also may experience mild stomach concerns or allergic reactions to mint, so it’s always a good idea to consult your healthcare provider before starting any new herbal remedies.
Can spearmint tea be combined with other remedies?
Some research suggests that spearmint may be even more effective when combined with other natural remedies. For example, a study by Mehraban et al. (2020) found that combining spearmint and flaxseed extract in rats improved hormonal balance and ovarian health. Testosterone levels and the number of cystic follicles (a common feature of PCOS) decreased. While more human studies are needed, this combination could offer additional support for women with PCOS.
So, is spearmint tea worth trying?
The research suggests that spearmint tea can be a helpful natural remedy for managing certain androgen-level related PCOS symptoms, like excess body and facial hair growth, acne and irregular periods. Drinking two cups of spearmint tea daily may help reduce free testosterone levels and improve symptoms over time. While more long-term studies are needed, spearmint tea may be a relatively safe and affordable option for many women.
If you're looking for a natural way to support hormone balance and reduce excess hair growth, spearmint tea might be worth adding to your routine. Combined with other dietary changes or supplements, it could enhance your overall health. Just make sure to check with your healthcare provider to ensure it’s right for you.
